The Seattle Mariners and New York Mets have agreed to a trade, pending physicals, that will send closer Edwin Diaz and second baseman Robinson Cano to New York. Seattle will send $20 million to the Mets in addition to Diaz and Cano, while New York will ship Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn in return.
The Mets are gaining one of the best closers in baseball with Diaz, who led the majors with 57 saves last season. The 24-year-old was drawing interest from several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, who now must decide whether to re-sign Craig Kimbrel in free agency or look elsewhere on the market. New York’s acquisition of Diaz will be costly, as it will be responsible for the final five years of Cano’s massive contract.
