NEW YORK (77 WABC) – A speech hosted by the Binghamton University College Republicans on the schools campus featuring former Reagan administration member Arthur Laffer was shut down by protesters on Monday. SUNY Binghamton issued a statement condemning the individuals who were responsible for the disruption and eventual shutdown of the lecture by Laffer who was recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump.
The lecture by Laffer was intended to give students the opportunity to learn about the values of limited government and free enterprise. The event was cut short after protesters, some wearing masks surrounded the venue and used a loudspeaker to shout out their message. The disruption caused organizers of the lecture which was sponsored by the “Young America’s Foundation” to end the discussion early and two protesters were arrested.
The Arthur Laffer lecture incident came a few days after another disruption took place on the SUNY Binghamton campus after an outdoor table display was set up to hand out flyers to promote Laffer’s upcoming appearance. A group of students surrounded the area around the table display where students were working to promote the Laffer event. The group who surrounded the table began to knock the promotional materials that were displayed on the table to the ground and began to harass the students who were promoting the event by taunting them for being conservative and white. The students who were working at the table were eventually escorted away from the area by University Police who feared for the students safety. University officials issued statements addressing both incidents.
