American Red Cross says worst flu season in 20 years could be sidelining blood donors; blood drive is Wednesday in Columbia

The American Red Cross Central and Northern Missouri Chapter is urging you to donate blood Wednesday afternoon in Columbia, saying the Red Cross’ blood supply has dropped 35 percent in the past month.

They say they’re facing a severe blood shortage as requests from hospitals exceed the available supply of blood. They add the shortage is especially serious for platelets and types O, A negative and B negative blood. The Red Cross also describes this as the worst flu season in nearly 20 years.

You can donate blood today from noon to 6:45 at the Columbia blood donation center at 1511 South Providence.
