The game never became the offensive showcase many expected, instead turning into a defensive, physical battle marked by long scoring droughts and tough possessions on both ends. Michigan led 33-29 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, leaning on composure and execution late to fend off multiple UConn pushes.

(CONTINUED) Neither team found much rhythm from the perimeter. Michigan shot 38 percent from the field and 2 of 15 from 3-point range (13 percent), while UConn finished at 31 percent overall and 27 percent from deep. What ultimately separated the Wolverines was efficiency at the free-throw line, where they went 25 of 28 (89 percent) as the Huskies were forced to foul down the stretch. Junior guard Elliot Cadeau led all scorers with 19 points, providing steady ballhandling and timely drives, while sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UConn was paced by senior forward Alex Karaban’s 17 points and senior center Tarris Reed Jr.’s 14 rebounds, but the Huskies struggled to generate clean looks late as Michigan’s defense held firm. Despite winning the rebounding battle 46-39, UConn could not overcome turnovers and poor shooting during critical stretches. Michigan’s discipline, poise and ability to score with the clock stopped sealed a long-awaited championship, the program’s first national title since 1989 and a defining statement for Dusty May’s Wolverines.
